Ponta da Piedade, Lagos, Algarve

Ponta da Piedade is simply one of the most extraordinary places in the Algarve. Rocks carved by the wind and tides for thousands of years form caves and tunnels in an incredibly beautiful spot. In that corner of Lagos, the sea is incredibly transparent, which, together with the ravishing cliffs, makes the landscape a true wonder of nature.

Situated in Lagos, Ponta da Piedade is certainly one of the Algarve’s best caves with a reputation that rivals that of Benagil Cave.

Sunset

Ponta da Piedade at the end of the afternoon acquires a unique beauty, which led many to describe it’s sunset as the most beautiful in the world. Towards the end of the day, when the sun’s rays strike in an almost parallel way to the ocean, the sea is covered with shining tones that flood us with absolute serenity. The caves acquire golden tones and nature presents itself as an enormous treasure.

In order to see the sunset we recommend that you are aboard a boat, since there is no sensation that matches the freedom of witnessing the end of the day while gently bouncing to the rhythm of the waves. A boat also offers you an unobstructed view of the ocean and the rock formations of Ponta da Piedade.

Another spot where you can see the sunset is in the bay of Ponta da Piedade (also known as Ponta da Piedade’s Beach).

A third alternative is to see the sunset on the top of one of the cliffs. The top of the cliffs offers the best view over the ocean, providing a tremendous spectacle at the moment the sea swallows the sun. However, from the top of the cliff it is difficult to contemplate the effect of the last rays of sun in the rock formations of Ponta da Piedade.
